WHY I CREATED BEAUTY BOSS NETWORK, & WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Hey, Beauty Boss!
So lately I’ve gotten to think a lot about why I created Beauty Boss Network. With Thanksgiving this week, I am definitely in the spirit of reflecting on not only what I am thankful for this year, but even more importantly why. If you haven’t ever thought deeply into your why, then that is your Thanksgiving HOMEWORK, honey!! Because being clear and focused on your why (at least for me) has driven every step I take. So take a moment, reflect, and actually write down WHY you do what you do, and WHY you are thankful for the things that you’re thankful for.

One of the things I am MOST thankful for this year, is following my instinct to even start Beauty Boss Network. I have been a makeup artist and hairstylist for the past 11 years (you can check out my work here). So far I’d say I’ve had a good run working with clients around the world, from glamming Mariah Carey, LeAnn Rimes, and grooming Ezekiel Elliot for the ESPN Body Issue cover, it’s been awesome. Then one day I realized, no matter how amazing of a career I have, I would always be trading my time for money… and I can never make more time. So I wanted to create a business that would allow me to bring in income beyond the time that I have to offer. When I contemplated what that would be, I realized my only other passion was personal development, and helping others in the industry… I had several girls that I mentored and watching them grow made me hella proud…so the question became how can I make an income AND an impact. Lots of thought, market research, and hard work later, Beauty Boss Network was born. Here’s why I’m in love with what we do here:

COMMUNITY
What I realized on my makeup artistry and hairstyling journey was that most of my BEST career opportunities came from people in other areas of the industry. That’s why it was so important that Beauty Boss Network wasn’t JUST for makeup artists or hairstylists, but for everyone involved in beauty. I love that this community embodies every facet and every realm of the beauty industry. Our members include makeup artists, hair stylists, beauty bloggers, aestheticians, plastic surgeons, registered nurses, eyebrow specialists, eyelash specialists, product development specialists, salon/spa management, retail managers, barbers, photographers, fitness professionals, financial advisors, lawyers, and the list goes on!

NETWORKING
I can first-hand attest to the significance of networking (as all of us probably can) so being able to easily and succinctly find other industry professionals, and connect with them both virtually and through live events on this platform was so important. Our baller members are able to search for other beauty pros by name, location, expertise, or any other keyword they can think of and browse their profile to see their bio, images of their work, videos, links to their website and social media…. we basically built these profile pages to be like a business card on steroids so that it is fast and simple to find someone you need to connect with.

PROMOTION
We all need visibility. That’s why our calendar isn’t only for OUR events that WE host. It’s for our members to use as well. If someone in our community is hosting a mixer at their salon, or a class, or even a meet-up, they can post their event to the Beauty Boss Network calendar for the community to see. Everyone who comes to this platform is looking for one thing: resources to build, boost, and promote their business in the BEAUTY industry. So we provide a targeted audience that our community is able to utilize to broaden their visibility!

NO-BRAINER
I wanted to make it EASY for people to invest in themselves. Anyone who has invested into this community gets discounts on everything… and I mean everything: merchandise, resources downloads, coaching programs (hint hint, flashing forward to a 2018 launch, hollaaaa), webinars, events, and anything else on the horizon.

THE FLAWLESS OFFICE GUIDE

Hey, Beauty Boss!
With the new year fast approaching, it is the perfect time to begin that home office makeover. Let’s not wait for the new year to get here to commit to making positive changes. Hit the ground running and be ready when that ball drops to put your fresh space to work. According to the statistics, enjoying your environment can have a substantial impact on your productivity, and coming from a girl who recently rearranged her entire space I 1,000% agree!! Which is exactly why this week I wanted to share a few tips to easily and inexpensively revamp your workspace so that you can get ready for your best year yet!





Let The Light In



According to a study I read up on, employees who had their desk by a window had 15% higher productivity than those who were facing a wall. When I decided to rearrange my home office last month, I decided to put this statistic to test, and I have not been disappointed. The light flooding in helps keep my energy up. Plus being able to see beyond a wall has completely opened up my mind when it comes time to brainstorm and be creative. “But Bri, what if I don’t have a window in my workspace?” My answer to that is, treat yo-self to a bright, and cute desk lamp. Anything you can do to brighten your workspace will also brighten your mood and outlook!

Mood Boards For The Win



Pinterest is great and all, but there is nothing like having a good, old-fashioned real life visual to personalize your space AND simultaneously keep you on track. Mood boards can be created and easily customized on a corkboard like I’ve done in my own home office, or a magnetic chalkboard that you can draw on and pin things to. They add personality PLUS visually keep you on track with your priorities. We are obsessed with the mood board game in the Rebecca Taylor office!

Make It Your Happy Place



Speaking of adding personality, don’t forget to bring in things that make YOU smile. Yea, your office is the place where you get ish done, but that doesn’t mean it needs to feel like a detention center. Make sure you light your favorite candle, or maybe bring in a some fresh flowers, or a plant. Bringing in elements that make you happy will make being a Beauty Boss feel more like a treat than a chore!

MAKING MONEY MOVES LIKE A GIRL BOSS (PATH TO POWER RECAP)

Hey, Beauty Boss!

Last week I got the opportunity to attend an amazing event hosted by Essence and Northwestern Mutual. The Path to Power panel of total girl bosses spilled ALL the tea on some juicy topics from money mindset, to mentorship, relationships, and being a girl boss!

I mean… I can barely put into words the brilliance on one stage and the amount of takeaways I scribbled down!  If you weren’t able to come out then, honey, you missed out but fear not, Beauty Boss. Here are a few of my key takeaways that I walked away with at Path To Power!

“There is a world that is waiting on your greatness and when you show up for it, it will show up for you.” -Allyson Byrd

This quote really hit home for me. So often we think that simply “showing up” and being present should show for something. The reality is it’s not just about “showing up” but being clear and intentional about what you showed up for. As Allyson explains, “we have to show up and say I showed up to eat, and this is what I want on the menu.”  Don’t fool yourself into believing that being a hard worker is going to get you to where you’re trying to go. It’s being a SMART worker that is going to get you there, so be intentional about your moves and plan out your success!

“Pay yourself first, and if you cannot then you need to look yourself in the mirror.” -Anitra Blue-Francis

 This Northwestern Mutual Financial Advisor explained how sometimes it is HARD to hold up the mirror to yourself and admit that things are not working.  That does NOT mean give up, but it means that you need to be honest with yourself FIRST so that you can recognize that something needs to change.  Perhaps that means trading your Audi in for a Honda (we love Honda’s).  Perhaps that means downgrading your home.  Or maybe it just means that you need to up your hustle!  Whatever the case, it is important to set aside your pride and put yourself in the power seat to make smart decisions for the betterment of the long haul!

I mean…. is there anything more to explain?  Ultimately we have to choose which kind of party we want to have…. a pitty-party or a success-celebration.  Is it sympathy that you are looking for or is it results?   If results are what you are looking for then stop dwelling on your problems and focus on the solution!

We have heard it a million times but it Never. Gets. Old.  We HAVE to keep investing in ourselves because if you are tired of getting what you have always gotten, then you need to quit doing what you have always done! Investing in your growth is essential to navigating the path to power and those who choose to make their growth a priority get the fasted route!

The Senior Editor of ESSENCE herself could not have made it any realer!! Would it be an honest relationship?  Would it be shady?  Would it be consistent or all over the place?  If your relationship were a hot mess, would you stay in it?  Probably not!  So get into a serious relationship with your money and treat it like Bae so that you can grow a long, beautiful, and happy relationship like a boss.

5 Books Your Business Will Thank You For Reading

Trust me, I of ALL people understand what it’s like to feel SOOO busy with being busy that it can be a) hard to justify time to read, and b) hard to find the energy.  Well, last year I went through my first formal coaching program where reading was basically one of the “assignments,” so it felt like I finally had permission to slow down and really get into books.  It’s funny how “not into reading” I was growing up, but within the past two years I have become a JUNKIE.  The first two books that I was assigned during that program were The Platinum Rule and The E-Myth.  From there, I was pretty much obsessed with the inspiration, motivation, clarity, and know-how I took away with each of these game-changing reads.

After that, I pretty much became a sucker for personal development books… and thankfully with good reason.  According to entrepreneur.com 86% of wealthy people love to read, 88% of them read 30+ minutes a day, and 63% of them listen to audiobooks on their way to work.

Moral of the story: if you want to boost your boss-game, then you need to boost your book-game.

Here are my top 5 books that your business will THANK you for reading:

1. The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It

   I. Love. This. Book.  Basically, this book made me not only look at my business, but it also made me look at how I run it.  It breaks down everyone you work with into 3 working styles: entrepreneur, manager, and technician…. and realizing what role you ACTUALLY play versus the role you THINK you play is eye opening in and of itself.  The book then makes you imagine that you want to franchise your business (whether you ever want to franchise your business or not), because in order to franchise, you need to have a prototype where every single piece of what you do has a system and process.  Without spoiling the realllllly good stuff, just know that implementing these systems and processes have become the pulse of what I do and how I do it, and made running a successful business way easier.  This one is definitely a must read.

2. The Platinum Rule: Discover the Four Basic Business Personalities and How They Can Lead You to Success

   
   I used to think I was good with people until I read this book Tweet This I used to think I was good with people until I read this book. And the truth is, I was good with people, but now, I am ridiculously good with people (if I do say so myself).  This book breaks all the different business personalities out there into 4 distinct personality types and walks you through how to best communicate with each of these personality types through just about every business interaction you can think of from selling to them, to motivating them, to reprimanding them, you name it.
   
   
   
    It also has a cool exercise in the book where you find out what style you have (which let me just say, I didn’t guess my OWN business personality accurately at first, which is another eye-opening discovery) and has literally served as a guiding light in working with my team, clients, sponsors, and anyone else in between.

3. The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness

   The title of this book really sums it all up perfectly.  This brilliant book teaches you how to tap into the power of daily discipline (this one is for you fellow procrastinators out there), how to identify habits that help you boost your business, and replace the ones that don’t, how to form healthy relationships with positive people, how to grow your knowledge by finding the right mentor for you, AND how to truly recognize the real difference between failure and success.  Basically, Jeff Olson teaches you how to get the slight edge that successful and happy people have!  Who else wants some of that?  I did, so I read this one, and it has helped me recognize when I am sliding into bad habits and snapping out of them.

4. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change

   Okay.  All of these habits that you learn are amazing.  I think the ONE that I will share with you is one that my dad preached to me as a little girl and resonates with me the most because I implement it into everything I do, and that is: begin with the end in mind.  Much like a puzzle, if you begin with visualizing what the end result is supposed to look like, then putting the puzzle together is much easier.  Same concept is applied to everything in life.  Begin with visualizing the end result, and plan backwards from there.  These habits are all simple, easy to implement (or at least for me), and definitely result in higher efficiency and better success!

5. How to Win Friends & Influence People

   If you want more clients, if you want to grow your team, if you want your team to be die hard for your dream, then you need to read this book.  This book quite literally teaches you the top practices to winning friends and being an influencer…. but the best part about it is that these practices only work for those who come from a genuine place, and with integrity.  If you are coming from a manipulative place, these practices simply won’t work.  Hence, making this book the REAL DEAL to becoming an influencer and a winner of friends!
